The Intelligencer (Doylestown, PA), Which Of Your Debts to Pay Off First
(December 30, 2003)
Dear Mary: Where can I find the best price for an item I want to purchase? Dear Nameless: My favorite way to comparison shop, whether I plan to buy online or not, is to use the Internet. I rely mostly on Yahoo! Shopping at http://shopping.yahoo.com, in addition to www.BizRate.com, www.BookFinder.com, www.mySimon.com and www.PriceGrabber.com.
The Chicago Sun Times, The Pendulum Swings Left
(December 28, 2003)
This wasn't just another big year for Harry Potter (The Order of the Phoenix sold 5 million copies just on Opening Day). It was also the year a sleeping monster finally awoke: Liberal Lit rose up to smite the ruling Conservative Lit, and as 2003 faded was more than holding its own in the political trenches...Most-sought-after out-of-print title of the year: Sex, the semi-pornographic 1992 pictorial collection by and of a mostly nude Madonna, according to BookFinder.com.
The Washington Times, Deer Kill Up Slightly in Md.
(December 24, 2003)
More about that deer book? Reader Harry Crow writes, 'I searched BookFinder.com for the Venison Book and found many [used] copies from $4 to $8, but Amazon.com has it new for $4.95.' Here's a tip of the hat and a thank you. We recently mentioned the Venison Book in a column. It's small but filled with information about hunting deer, cutting meat, and cooking venison.
The Daily Telegraph (Verenigd Koninkrijk), Literary Life
(December 22, 2003)
BookFinder.com, the online book search-engine, has compiled a list of the most sought-after out-of-print titles in the United States this year. According to the total number of searches on the American website, the top five most wanted books are: Sex by Madonna; World Crisis, Winston Churchill's history of the First World War; Flicker, Theodore Roszak's brilliant novel about the movie industry; Curse of Lono, Hunter S. Thompson's gonzo account of his trips to Hawaii; and General Printing by Glen Cleeton ('Everything you ever wanted to know about letterpress printing but were afraid to ask').
The Lexington Herald-Leader (KY), 'Sex,' 'World Crisis' Stand Side-by-Side: Out-of-Print Bestsellers Make for Odd Couplings
(December 21, 2003)
The question seems to beg for a punch line: What do Madonna and Winston Churchill have in common? Or, for that matter, Madonna and Hunter S. Thompson? Or Madonna and Sinclair Lewis? Or Madonna and Alice Starmore, a heretofore unknown author of a knitting how-to? Lest lurid imaginations begin to scamper, we will quickly supply the answer: Last month, a book by Madonna the 'author,' a tome called Sex, was No. 1 on a best-seller list. Churchill's account of World War I, The World Crisis, was No. 2. Rounding out the top 10 were books by Thompson, Lewis, Starmore, Carl Sagan and a fellow named Glen Cleeton, whose General Printing is said to be an essential primer in its field. No. This obviously is not your average, New York Times-type best-seller list. Instead, this top-10 list, published last month by the Internet book broker BookFinder.com, charts the most sought-after 'out-of-print' titles -- in other words, books that have been abandoned by their publishers for one reason or another but have retained significant audiences just the same. As such, says BookFinder.com founder Anirvan Chatterjee, the list is a unique, Internet-age glimpse into underground reading tastes not influenced by the mega-marketing campaigns of publishing houses and major booksellers.
The Star-Ledger (Newark, NJ), Reading Between State Lines With American Guide Series

The Globe and Mail (Canada), Readers Still Want Sex
(December 12, 2003)
Madonna may have reinvented herself as a popular children's-book author, but it's the queen of pop and self-promotion's earlier literary ambition that is still climbing bestseller lists: Her 1992 photo book Sex is the No. 1 best-selling out-of-print book, according to BookFinder.com, one of the world's biggest websites for finding used and rare books. BookFinder.com's list shows that Madonna's bedfellows are stranger than those found in her racy book about her sexual fantasies. No. 2 is Winston Churchill's World Crisis, his hard-to-find, multivolume work on the First World War; The Curse of Lono, Hunter S. Thompson's account of his travels in Hawaii sits at No. 4; Carl Sagan's Murmurs of the Earth, a book of essays and a collection of the images and audio information encompassing human life encoded on the Voyager spaceships, occupies No. 6; and a guide to Aran knitting styles fills the No. 7 spot. 'What's really exciting about the list is that the books are all really random and diverse,' said Anirvan Chatterjee, the founder and CEO of BookFinder.com...It's certainly true that BookFinder.com's list reflects more than the latest round of releases from publishing companies. For instance, Standing Room Only, Elizabeth Fowler's 1944 account of her harrowing experience on a lifeboat in the mid-Atlantic after the steamer she was aboard was torpedoed by a German U-Boat, is No. 9 on the out-of-print list; the revival of interest was likely sparked by her death last June.
The Star Telegram (Fort Worth), Site Gives Obscure Titles New Life
(December 11, 2003)
No. This obviously is not your average New York Times bestseller list. Instead, this top-10 list, published last month by the Internet book broker BookFinder.com, charts the most sought-after out-of-print titles -- in other words, books that have been abandoned by their publishers for one reason or another but have retained significant audiences just the same. As such, says BookFinder.com founder Anirvan Chatterjee, the list is a unique, Internet-age glimpse into underground reading tastes not influenced by the megamarketing campaigns of publishing houses and major booksellers...That Sinclair Lewis' 1935 novel It Can't Happen Here landed at No. 10 came as no surprise to Sally Parry, an English professor at Illinois State University and a Lewis scholar. Parry says the book traces the trajectory of a closet fascist who is elected to the American presidency and the terrible repercussions. 'I was aware it was popular,' Parry says of It Can't Happen Here. 'One of the reasons is that with our very conservative political environment, there are a lot of correlations between the world of the book and our current world. The gradual loss of civil liberties in the book leads to internment camps. I'd like to teach it every time there is a national election.'
The Washington Times, Auto Notes

Internet site helps with auto books: The Internet can come to the rescue of auto enthusiasts looking for hard-to-find books and other material on the subject. BookFinder.com is a free service that scans an estimated 40 million books on any subject and connects searchers with a network of thousands of booksellers. The entrepreneur developed BookFinder.com in 1996 as a class project at the University of California at Berkeley. Touting the value of his service to auto enthusiasts, Mr. Chatterjee says: 'You may not be able to afford a vintage vehicle, but you can always read about it.'

The Atlantic, New & Noteworthy
(December 2003)
Talese never spoke to Sinatra, but this endures as the definitive portrait: We see Sinatra as brutal and generous, charming and bullying, lonely and removed. Talese revealed how these discrete and contradictory qualities shaded into one another, and so let readers discern Sinatra as a man, even as he made plain that Sinatra's charisma remained impenetrable. In both this profile and the one of DiMaggio (whom he characterized, spot on, as 'a kind of male Garbo'), Talese portrayed his era's masculine ideal as a kind of detached engagement; these pieces are essential to understanding not merely two American icons but the gender relations, family life, popular culture, and political style of the American Century. The best of Talese's journalistic work -- including many pieces not reprinted here -- was collected in Fame and Obscurity (1970), now out of print. If you can't find it at a used-book store or on BookFinder.com, buy this intelligently edited assemblage. Oh -- and thanks and congratulations to Esquire, which celebrated its seventieth anniversary this past fall.

Madonna's first book wasn't some twee little trifle about jealousy on the playground. It had nudity and Vanilla Ice and was called 'Sex.' It's the most in-demand out of print book of 2003, according to BookFinder.com. Second on the list is 'World Crisis' by Winston Churchill, but that book doesn't have Naomi Campbell in it.

Chronicling the lives of immigrants in 'The Interpreter of Maladies' garnered her a Pulitzer Prize. But Jhumpa Lahiri, 36, born in London and raised in Rhode Island, has never been an immigrant like the characters of her books, who journey to America from small towns and big cities in India. In her latest novel, 'The Namesake' (Houghton Mifflin), Lahiri looks not just at the lives of immigrants but also their children -- people like her...'I inherited a sense of exile from my parents,' Lahiri says...'I was struck by how closely some of the plot points and description matched my experiences and that of other Bengali second-generation friends,' says Anirvan Chatterjee, the mastermind behind the online search engine BookFinder.com. He thinks second-generation South Asians can relate readily to Lahiri's depiction of juggling identities. 'She has a much smaller readership among first-generation immigrants, though she enjoys a lot of name recognition as a Bengali achiever, post-Pulitzer,' he says.

A 26-year-old co-founder of BookFinder.com, which attracts millions of shoppers a year, calls it a 'new Renaissance' in bookselling. Clientele varies widely, says Anirvan Chatterjee of Berkeley, Calif. 'They include students, academics, plain folks who like to read, older folks looking for books they've read a long time back. We have a lot of book collectors. It's really a wide range.' BookFinder.com grew out of his passion for books and a college project, said Chatterjee. While he won't divulge the specifics of his business, Chatterjee says customers can easily, at no cost, search 50,000 bookstore inventories around the world from their home computers. His Web site calls BookFinder.com 'a literary shopping engine, with a database of over 50 million books.' Customers can search for books -- new, used and out-of-print -- by title, author, or language.

Our website of the week this week is BookFinder.com, a site we've showed you before, but that has a new twist. Not only will it find the best prices for you on new books, it will find them for used books as well. So, why are you seeing 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High'? Well, as it turns out, the movie is based on a book by the same name, a book you can no longer find because it is out-of-print. If you want the latest Steven King, just log on and BookFinder.com will scan all the sites like Amazon and Barnes & Noble and return the best price. But, let's say you wanted the book 'World Famous Paintings.' It's out-of-print, just like this book on horse whispering and this Bobbie Fischer book, all turned into movies, by the way. Now, BookFinder.com works with more than 50,000 used booksellers, so the chances are, if it's out there, they can find it for you. And, Scott, a bit of trivia for you, the book 'Sex' by Madonna -- remember that from the 80s? is worth nearly 200 dollars used. I assumed you kept your copy, right?
Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal, Top Out-of-Print Books Listed
(November 20, 2003)
Sex, disco and Winston Churchill are among the topics and authors of what a Berkeley dot-com retailer says are the 10 most popular books in 2003 that are out of print...'If you scan the big national bestseller lists, you usually end up with a few hits like Harry Potter or Left Behind, a bunch of thrillers, and a morass of diet and self-help books,' says BookFinder.com founder and CEO, Anirvan Chatterjee. 'Looking at popular out-of-print books is much more interesting, because the list isn't driven by corporate marketing campaigns, or by the purchasing decisions of big megastores. Real readers bring real diversity.'

(November 9, 2003)
Lastly, our regular 'classic' title: I was trying to think of a book that covered both the performing arts and animals, and the one that immediately came to mind was The Painted Garden by Noel Streatfield. It's the story of an English family who goes to America on holiday. As in many of Streatfield's books, the children are artistically gifted. But in this case, the middle child is not and she feels like the clumsy, unexciting, odd one out. However, she is the one who ends up having the most fun as she is chosen to act in a movie of Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden. The high point of the experience is when she gets to work closely with animals. Like many of Streatfield's books, this is no longer in print. The good news is you can find it for as little as RM6 (excluding postage) on www.BookFinder.com.

For years, this meant hoofing it down to the local bookstore to peruse the latest offerings or, if rare books are your thing, paging through a sometimes expensive catalog from rare booksellers. The Internet has changed all that...'Book-selling was one of the first professions that lent itself to the Internet,' he said. 'Most bookstores have been online for long time. Books are quantifiable they're enough alike to put them into a database and enough different to be differentiated. The Internet is old news in the book trade.' In fact, there are several booksellers in Billings who have shunned opening a store in favor of operating solely on the Internet. For two years, Kimberly Easton and her husband, Rev. Joseph L. 'Selling books online gives booksellers access to an active global marketplace,' said Anirvan Chatterjee, founder and chief executive officer of BookFinder.com, a service that allows customers to buy books from 50,000 bookstores around the world. 'Expanding your customer base is a pretty obvious win in these tough economic times, particularly for booksellers in smaller communities,' Chatterjee said...The toughest challenge used-booksellers face when they move to the Internet is building a strong database of their books. 'Booksellers need to be very organized so that books are added to the online inventory as soon as they're acquired and removed as they're sold,' Chatterjee said. 'It's all about coming up with a system and sticking to it.'

Ipsos BookTrends, a Chicago-based research firm, estimates that Americans bought 145 million used books last year, spending $533 million. (By comparison, the Book Industry Study Group reports total noneducational book sales of $7 billion in 2002.) 'About one-third of trade [nontextbook] buyers bought both a new and a used book between April and December 2002,' says Barrie Rappaport, manager of Ipsos BookTrends. 'If you can save $5 on a book, why not?'...Students especially are flocking to online booksellers for used textbooks. 'If you're looking for a textbook,' says McCaffrey, 'the college bookstore wants $76 for a physics text. The student has a laptop computer; he goes to BookFinder.com and finds the book selling for $20. Why should he spend $76 at the college bookstore?'

How about just, 'I want to buy a first edition copy of Gone With The Wind.' I can enter that into Google right now, and the first ad for BookFinder.com led me to some promising results. In Google's editorial results, a link also led to a really good article on how to identify a first edition (and first printing, if that's also what you want) of the book. Maybe the non-Semantic Web is actually better than Semantic Web proponents think.

The last books of summer. Everyone knows which books publishers are pushing this summer: Expensive hardcovers so fat you dread lugging them in your beach bag (thank you, J.K. Rowling). But there are many places online to find offbeat reading recommendations. One, www.whichbook.net, has British book lovers abuzz. Similar to www.allreaders.com, Whichbook not only lets you search for books based on plot, theme or character, it also lets you browse by style and mood. For instance, you can indicate on a sliding scale whether you want a book that's safe or disturbing. The site focuses on contemporary fiction and poetry available in paperback and published since 1995. Then there is BookFinder.com's list of the most requested out-of-print titles across 10 genres (http://report.bookfinder.com), based on searches carried out at the site in 2002.

This isn't like Napster putting music up on the internet so you can download it free, but the market has broadened in a way all but unthinkable seven or eight years ago. Anirvan Chatterjee, who started BookFinder.com, says: "You're almost guaranteed that if there's a copy of a book out there, anywhere, you have access to it." A foreseeable consequence of this, he adds, "is that publishers are monitoring what does sell on the internet, with a view to keeping more and more books in print and in the catalogue - push-button technologies allow them to do this. In other words, the numbers of available new books will continue to grow, and sharply."

Earlier this year, BookFinder.com, one of the Web's most extensive used-book search services, released its first bestseller lists, organized by subject matter, revealing just what odd, out-of-print volumes Americans are buying. Not surprisingly, Madonna's limited-edition, aluminum-bound book of naughty photos--the singer, circa 'Erotica,' getting naked with rapper Vanilla Ice (among many others)--tops BookFinder.com's Arts and Music list; a pristine copy with mylar wrapping intact can set you back 500 dollars or more.

A funny thing happened on the way to obsolescence. The Internet revolution, which was supposed to consign printed books to the shredder, instead energized the market for old ones. Thousands of used bookstores no longer need to wait for an interested buyer to spot some cherished but lost title on a dusty shelf. Databases on the World Wide Web can now connect the most obscure book with anyone who can recall a favorite title or author. While towers of Hillary and Harry threaten to crush shoppers at Barnes & Noble, we were delighted to get the first out-of-print bestseller report from BookFinder.com, the world's largest searchable book inventory. These titles enjoy the conflicted distinction of being the most wanted of the least available books in America. To see what some of these books are like and how to get them, we crawled out onto the Web and bought copies of the top book in six different categories. We made our purchases through several online sources, all of which provided seamless access to inventory from an enormous number of used bookstores around the country. Payment with a credit card was easy, and all shipments arrived as promised in two or three weeks. If you want to brave the out-of-print world, remember you'll face far more choices than when you buy themall. Out-of-print books are offered in a variety of candidly described 'conditions,' from signed first editions to badly worn paperbacks. Bookworms, dig in.

(Juni 21, 2003)
Amidst all the 'Harry hype,' a charming and timely book for young readers, in St. Louis at least, has been overlooked. I refer to 'Meet Me in St. Louis' by Sally Benson, originally published by Random House in 1942 and reprinted by a number of other publishers in hardback and paperback editions. Its 12 chapters cover each month from June 1903 - 100 years ago this month - through May 1904. What a treat it would be for young people to read each chapter during the 100th anniversary of the month covered by a chapter in the book and discuss it with other young readers! Finding a copy of the book does not seem to be easy, however. It is not in print and BookFinder.com lists one at $4.95 and others from $15 up. What a pity no publisher seems to have seen fit to reissue it.

Changes in the status of availability of new books, remainders and used books are all the result of a series of decisions taken by the market--the combination of authors, publishers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and customers. As the book market continues to evolve, new technologies are developed and used book businesses grow, the number of alternatives available to all parties grows more interesting--and at times complex...Practices for acquiring used and/or remaindered product vary as well. Some libraries have staff search across multiple online vendors and manage the purchase, shipping and processing from individual sellers using Web sites like BookFinder.com or AddAll, or directly on Alibris' consumer Web site, ABE, Amazon.com, Half.com, eBay and other sites.

PW Daily for Booksellers [Publishers Weekly], Publishers, Take Note: BookFinder.com Lists Top Out-of-Print Book Searches
(April 30, 2003)
BookFinder.com, a six-year-old online used and rare book comparison shopping search engine, is launching a service likely to be of particular interest to publishers: an out-of-print 'bestseller list.' BookFinder.com is not a retailer but an aggregator that searches a variety of retailers, including ABEBooks.com, Alibris.com, Amazon.com and Powells.com, for requested titles and lists them according to price. Thus, rather than tracking sales, the list tracks the most requested books that are currently out-of-print and uses categories such as arts and music, fiction and literature, history and poetry. The first set of lists, based on an analysis of aggregate trends for out-of-print book searches between July and December of 2002, is online at http://report.bookfinder.com/
The Columbus Dispatch, Basbanes' Latest for Beginners
(April 27, 2003)
During the past decade, Nicholas A. Basbanes has emerged as the pre-eminent author on book-collecting. He did not invent this bibliophilic genre, but rather, admirably perpetuates into the 21st century a tradition established by Thomas Frognall Dibdin's The Bibliomania (1809), John Hill Burton's The Book-Hunter (1862), P.B.M. Allan's Book-Hunter at Home (1920) and many other forebears to whom he pays homage...Basbanes recommends searching electronic resources, such as the Advanced Book Exchange (www.abebooks.com) or BookFinder.com (www.bookfinder.com), that are organized and maintained by book dealers. He notes that, in addition to the reliability of such search engines, 'the potential of such resources is obvious, especially for comparison shoppers intent on establishing a price range for various titles.'

Martha Stewart Living (CBS), Homemade Baby Food
(April 16, 2003)
Around baby's sixth month, his or her nutritional requirements gradually begin to change. Of course, it's essential that parents consult with their pediatricians before making any adjustments to their children's diets. Generally, however, this is a good time to introduce new flavors and textures to baby's meals. Pureed foods can usually be made a bit coarser and incorporate some of the same flavors adults enjoy, as in this flavorful chicken, potato, and carrot recipe. William H. Dietz and Loraine Stern 'Guide to Your Child's Nutrition: The American Academy of Pediatrics Official Complete Home Reference' (Villard, 1999; out of print). Others are out of print and may be obtained in used bookstores or online at Web sites like Amazon.com and BookFinder.com.

The Plain Dealer (Cleveland, OH), Fashion Elegance By the Book
(Maart 5, 2003)
Because it won't be available for a few months, it might be worth looking for the original 'Elegance.' I recommend checking out used-book stores and used-book sites such as www.bibliofind.com and www.BookFinder.com. You'll find surprising, antiquated advice, about how sandals should never be worn in daytime in the city and boots should never worn by anyone but college girls. No doubt, you'll be a little amused, a little inspired and very grateful that style rules aren't as strict as they used to be.
